How to merge PDF files

Order is the thing that goes wrong
Almost every merge problem is an ordering problem. Files chosen in one go arrive in whatever
order your operating system hands them over, which is usually alphabetical by filename — and
alphabetical order lies. page10.pdf sorts before page2.pdf, so a
ten-part document merges with part ten in second place.
Two fixes. Either rename your files with padded numbers — 01, 02,
10 rather than 1, 2, 10 — or just check the
list above before merging and move anything out of place. The list is the order you will get,
with no surprises.
What people merge, and why
- Applications. A CV, a cover letter, a diploma and references, when the form accepts one attachment.
- Expenses. A month of receipts as a single claim.
- Signed documents. A contract plus its separately signed signature page.
- Scans. Pages scanned in batches, or a scanner that saves each page separately.
- Reports. Chapters written by different people, assembled at the end.
What the merged file looks like
You get one PDF containing every page in sequence. Pages keep their original size, so mixing A4 and US Letter documents produces a file with slightly different page dimensions — legal and correct, but visible if printed. If uniform pages matter, standardise before merging.
Because pages are copied rather than re-encoded, nothing is recompressed and no quality is lost. A merged file that is uncomfortably large can go through Compress PDF afterwards.
Merging without uploading
The documents people merge are exactly the ones worth not uploading: signed contracts, ID scans, payslips, medical records. This tool reads them in your browser and writes the merged file there. Nothing is transmitted, so there is no server copy to worry about.
Frequently asked questions
How do I control the page order?
The merged document follows the order shown in the file list. Use the arrow buttons on each file to move it up or down before merging.
How many PDFs can I merge?
Up to 20 files at once, with a combined total of 120 MB. That ceiling exists because everything is held in your browser's memory.
Are bookmarks and links kept?
Page content, text and images are copied faithfully. Document-level features — bookmarks, the outline tree, form fields and internal links — are not carried into the merged file.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
No. An encrypted PDF cannot be read without its password. Remove the protection in your PDF reader first.
Does merging reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied at their original resolution, not re-rendered. The merged file is roughly the sum of the originals.
