About FreeFileTools
FreeFileTools provides simple browser-based utilities for converting and managing documents. Convert a PDF to Word, a Word file to PDF, images to PDF and back, and merge, split or compress PDFs — without installing anything or creating an account.
What we are trying to do
- Useful. Tools that do one job properly, with the limitations stated instead of hidden.
- Free. No subscription, no trial, no watermark, and no daily quota or paid usage limit.
- No unnecessary registration. Converting a file is not a reason to hand over an email address.
- Privacy-focused. Where a job can be done on your device, it is.
- Designed for current versions of the major browsers, on a phone as much as a laptop.
How the tools actually work
Most conversion sites upload your file to a server, convert it there and send the result back. Every tool here instead runs inside the browser tab, using established open-source PDF and document libraries.
Your file is read from disk by the browser, processed in memory by open-source document libraries, and written back out as a download. It is never transmitted. You can verify this: open your browser's developer tools, watch the network tab, and convert something. The page may load application code and supporting resources, but no request carrying your document appears.
What we are honest about
Browser-based conversion has real limits and we would rather say so than oversell. PDF-to-Word conversion reconstructs structure the PDF format never stored, so complex layouts need manual tidying. Scanned documents need OCR, which we do not offer yet. Large files depend on your device's memory. Where a tool cannot do something well, its page says so and suggests what to use instead.
How this is paid for
No advertising is running yet. The service is intended to be funded through advertising, including ordinary display advertising and potentially optional rewarded experiences, so that the tools can stay free to use.
Whatever form it takes, advertising here will never be disguised as a download button or as any other ordinary site control. If you are ever asked to interact with an advert, it will be obvious that is what you are doing, and it will be a genuine choice rather than a trick.
Who is behind it
A small independent project, not a company with a sales team. Running the tools on your device rather than on servers is what keeps it cheap enough to offer for free.
